Planning on tackling a home improvement or renovation project in 2015? You are not alone. According to the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB), home remodeling is at an all-time high, and the scope of the projects are getting bigger and bigger. Not only are homeowners still renovating their existing homes, but more than 60 percent of homeowners who have been talking with contractors about remodeling in 2015 are prepared to open their wallets wider than those who made home improvements last year, and it’s not because the prices are soaring – the projects are getting bigger.
According to contractor surveys, 25 percent of their consumers are planning on spending $10,000 or more in 2015. But what are they planning to do?
Remodeling projects that top the list nationwide still include kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, but there’s a new trend in homeowners wanting bigger closets and extra pantry space. Also on the list are more luxurious bathrooms, and according to experts, remodeling your bathroom is one of the best returns on investment.
A new trend when it comes to improvements for 2015 is “Passive House”, which means making your home as eco-friendly and as cheap to run as possible. There are plenty of tweaks you can do to take advantage and cut down living costs, such as opening out windows or moving them to take advantage of the natural sunlight to heat the home.
High ceilings are definitely trending. There has been a massive increase in people wanting to turn their houses into something which resembles a hotel, including a big lobby area, large lounge, open plan kitchen and high ceilings. This makes sense, given that a home that feels closed and tightly packed, is much harder to de-stress from the working week. Studies show that more space and room to manoeuvre within the home de-stresses and de-clutters the brain far more quickly.
